the swim. We ask that you exercise extreme caution while entering and exiting the transition area during the race to keep it safe for all athletes.

Bike (12 miles): The bike loop will take you through portions of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. This will be a gently rolling course along beautifully maintained urban roads.

Run (3.0 miles): This loop is arguably the most amazing tri runs in all of New England! The run will start at transition and go along the marina from Spring Point Head Light to Bug Head Light. The path will meander through Bug Head Light Park, and take you within inches of the lighthouse before turning back towards campus. A connector path will lead athletes to the perimeter of the SMCC campus. Athletes will meet up with an amazing oceanfront path that will provide stunning ocean views and lead to an unforgettable finish!

Duathlon (1.5 mile run/12-15 mile bike/3.0 mile run): The duathlon is being offered for those athletes who choose to not do the swim portion of the race. It will consist of a shorter run, complete bike course, and complete run. The duathlon will start just minutes after the start of the first swim wave.

Relay (triathlon ONLY): Relays may be made up of two or three members. Each team member will complete one or two legs of the race. Each team will have one timing chip.

USAT Sanctioned: Tri for a Cure will be a USAT sanctioned event. There will be officials at transition and throughout the racecourse; making sure that all USAT rules are followed in accordance with their guidelines. If you are not familiar with these rules, please go to www.usatriathlon.org/MultiSport101.aspx and scroll down to “Rules.” This page will also provide valuable information on race etiquette, training, and membership.

Field Limited: Tri for a Cure is limited to 500 athletes.

Registration: We request that all athletes register prior to July 26th. Online registration will allow you to receive e-mail updates on the event and is strongly encouraged for both individual athletes and relay teams. All athletes are required to sign the USAT waiver which is done automatically when you register online.

  • Individual athletes – when registering online, please choose the appropriate registration type. Non USAT members pay an additional fee of $10 when registering to become a one day member.
  • Relay Teams – when registering online, the first person to register from the relay team will create a team name. The other team participants will select “join a relay team” and search for the team name to join and follow the process. All members of the relay MUST register in order to compete in the race. Each member must choose the appropriate registration type determined by the USAT membership status.

Pre-Race Check In & Expo: Race check in and the expo will take place on August 8th from 3-7pm, at the dining hall on the SMCC campus. Check in will also be available from 6-7am on race day at the race venue. We STRONGLY recommend checking in on Friday to avoid any delays. All athletes, including relay team members, must be present to check in on one of the two days provided. Athletes MUST provide a picture ID (and current USAT card if registered as a member). If you registered as a member of USAT and fail to bring your current membership card with you to check in, you will have to pay the $10 one-day member fee when you check in. USAT waivers will be available for any athlete that does not have one on file. Athletes will receive a packet with numbered swim cap, race number and timing chip. Athletes will also receive a goody bag filled with various items along with a race t-shirt. The expo will provide a wonderful opportunity for athletes to purchase last minute race items and learn more about tri related products and services.

Relay Check In: We encourage ALL team members to check in as a team on Friday, August 8that the SMCC cafeteria. Each team member MUST present a picture ID (and current USAT card if they registered as a USAT member). Any team member that registered as a USAT member and fails to bring a current membership card to check in, will be required to purchase a one-day license for $10.
