ME Tri for A Cure

General Information

Course Information

Tri for a Cure is a USAT sanctioned event. Officials are present at transitions and throughout the race course to ensure that all USAT rules are followed accordingly. If you are not familiar with these rules, click here for the USAT Competitive Rules document. This document also provides valuable information on race etiquette, training, and membership.

Swim (1/3 mile): Starting on the beach at Spring Point Head Light, athletes will do a counterclockwise triangular swim in a protected ocean cove that finishes on the same beach. Average water temperature in late July is 61 degrees. WETSUITS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for the swim due to chilly ocean temperatures.

Transition: Following the swim there will be a mini-transition area set up for you to remove your wetsuit and slip on running shoes for a short run to the bike transition area. Volunteers will be on site to help guide you in and out of transition. Please exercise extreme caution while entering and exiting all transition areas in order to promote safety for all athletes.

Please read athlete guide (available in July) for a full description of relay mini transition and transition. There will be several transition clinics to help with questions, including a clinic specifically for relays.

Bike (15 miles): The bike segment loops through portions of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. This will be a gently rolling course along beautifully maintained urban roads.

Run (3.1 miles): The run begins at the transition area and proceeds along the marina from Spring Point Head Light to Bug Head Light. The path meanders through Bug Head Light Park, near the lighthouse, and then winds back toward the SMCC campus and finish line. A connector path will lead athletes to the perimeter of the SMCC campus. On the perimeter, athletes will run alongside stunning ocean views leading to an unforgettable finish.

Relay: Relays are comprised of two or three members. Each team must swim, bike and run. Each member will complete one or two legs of the race. Each team will have one timing chip.

Please read athlete guide (available in July) for a full description of relay mini transition and transition. There will be several transition clinics to help with questions, including a clinic specifically for relays.
