ME Tri for A Cure

Tri for a Cure “NEW” All Women's Twilight 5K

5K

Thanks to the 460 runners who came out June 3rd to run in the 1st Annual Twilight 5K. Thanks to our sponsors and our volunteers for making it a night to remember!

Joanie Benoit Samuelson asked how many of you were running your first 5K. When you raised your hands it looked like there were about 40% of you that were doing something for the first time! We hope your experience was a memorable one!

Emily LeVan was an inspiration to us all with all of her running accomplishments! Thanks for sharing your family’s cancer journey with us. And of course, there was the Princess of our Twilight 5K - Maddie. She stole the show! Thank you Emily and Maddie, we loved having you there! Keep well!

Our event raised over $30,000 and we thank all of you for supporting the Maine Cancer Foundation! Your contributions will help us fund much needed cancer research right here in the State of Maine.

We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Special Guests: Emily and Maddie LeVan

Emily and Maddie LeVan

Originally from Oklahoma City, OK, Emily graduated from Bowdoin College in 1995 with a BA in Environmental Studies and Spanish. After teaching Spanish in elementary and high schools for six years she returned to school to pursue and degree in Nursing, receiving a BS in nursing in 2005.

During that time, she began running marathons on a nationally competitive level. She is a two-time winner of the Maine Marathon, holding the course record. She competed as a member of Team USA at the 2005 World Championships Marathon in Helsinki, Finland. She was the top American female finisher at the Boston Marathon in 2005 and 2006. She competed in the 2008 US Olympic Trials for the Marathon. Her personal best in the marathon is 2:37.01.

On November 5, 2007, Emily's daughter, Madeline (they call her Maddie) was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Suffice it to say, that Emily and her husband Brad were devastated and crushed by this diagnosis. In early November, Maddie, Brad and Emily spent 10 days at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME where she had blood transfusions, x-rays, ultrasounds, spinal taps, bone marrow biopsies, and chemotherapy. Their world was completely turned upside down. They learned that they were embarking on a new kind of marathon; one that, if all goes well, will last the next 2-3 years of Maddie’s life.

In 2008, Emily and her family developed the Two Trials Fundraiser for The Maine Children’s Cancer Program and raised over $77,000. She was inducted into the Bowdoin College Athletic Hall of Honor in October 2008. She now lives in Randolph Center, VT with her husband, Brad, and daughter, Maddie, where she works as an emergency department nurse, pursues a Master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner, and helps out on the family’s small farm, ALL Together Farm.
